These options control how the map appears on the screen or printer.
- Text
-
Control whether text is displayed when drawing the map. Unticking this option will automatically untick
Bubbled text, Constant size text
-
and Draw small text.
- Bubbled text
-
Control whether bubbled text is displayed when drawing the map. Ticking this option automatically ticks Text.
- Constant size text
-
Control whether text is drawn at a arbitrary constant size when drawing the map. Ticking this option automatically ticks Text.
- Draw small text
-
Control whether very small text is drawn when drawing the map. Ticking this option automatically ticks Text. Generally, this
option applies when the text is less than 6 pixels high.
- Symbols
-
Control whether symbols are displayed when drawing the map.
- See also:
- Wide lines
-
Control whether lines are drawn either a single pixel wide or as per their Object Display Control or rules definition. This option is mutually exclusive with Chosen wide lines.
- Chosen wide lines
-
Control whether chosen lines are drawn either a single pixel wide or as per their Object Display Control or rules definition. Non-chosen lines will always be drawn a single pixel wide. This option is mutually exclusive with Wide lines.
- Apply flow direction
-
Normally, line styles are drawn in the direction of digitisation, so that the directional line styles will
point from the start to the end. When flow direction is used on spans, this option ensures that spans whose flow direction is
set to reverse will have their line style drawn in the reverse of the direction of digitisation.
- Vertex crosses
-
Display small vertical and horizontal crosses on every intermediate vertex on every line item. Note that this
may slow the system down! If adjacent duplicate vertices exist on an item, a circle will also be drawn.
This option is mutually exclusive with Current item crosses.
- See also:
- Current item crosses
-
Display small vertical and horizontal crosses on every intermediate vertex on the current line item only.
If adjacent duplicate vertices exist on an item, a circle will also be drawn. Also draws small arrow heads at each end of the line.
This option is mutually exclusive with Vertex crosses.
- Scale visibility
-
Every feature may have a range within which it is visible defined in the rules. This option controls whether
this is taken account of when drawing the map.
- Polygon fill
-
Control whether polygons and seeds are drawn filled.
- See also:
- Highlight picked item
-
Highlight the current item when drawing items.
- Highlight chosen items
-
Highlight any chosen items when drawing items.
- Use cross hairs
-
Show cross-hairs in the map window from the cursor position to the frame of the map window
- Selected items only
-
Only draw items which are selected, i.e. deselected items will not be drawn.
- Object Display Control
-
Apply Object Display Control
- Opaque text
-
Controls whether text is drawn with a solid background or not.
- Hides as hoops
-
Controls whether hides are drawn as hoops only.
- Current item text only
-
Controls whether text is to be drawn for all items in the map, or only the current item.
These options control the normal find behaviour.
- Polygon: pick seed
-
When a polygon has been found, always pick the seed, which will be the first seed connected to the
polygon if the polygon is connected to multiple seeds. Normally, this option should be ticked.
- Line: snap to vertex
-
When finding lines, automatically snap the cursor to the nearest vertex on the line.

These options control the order in which data is drawn.
- Polygons first
-
Use this option to ensure that polygonal data underlies CMF line work and network data.
- Text last
-
Use this option to ensure that text is drawn above any other item.
These options control whether background data is drawn, and the appearance of the background data.
- CMF visible
-
Control whether loaded CMF data is visible.
- See also:
- CMF grey
-
Control whether the loaded CMF data is drawn in a single colour, controlled from the CMF Grey field of the Set Colours dialog.
- CMF polygons
-
Control whether the loaded CMF data polygons are drawn. If CMF grey is set,
the polygons will be drawn in a single colour, controlled from the CMF Grey field of the Set Colours dialog.
- Raster visible
-
Control whether loaded raster data is visible.
- See also:
- Transparent black and white rasters
-
Control whether black and white rasters are drawn transparent.

These options control the co-ordinate display within the status bar.
- OS NGR
- Note that the text can be different in certain customisations
- Display the conventional x,y co-ordinates in the status bar.
- OS tile name system
- Note that the text can be different in certain customisations
- Display the appropriate tile name in the status bar.
- Lat/Long (decimal)
-
Display the appropriate latitude and longitude values, in decimal degrees, in the status bar.
- Lat/Long (minutes)
-
Display the appropriate latitude and longitude values, in degrees, minutes and seconds, in the status bar.
These options control certain aspects of pan and scroll behaviour.
The first two options control the behaviour of the pan buttons on the Navigation toolbar:
- Small button step
- The button behaves the same as the arrow keys without
the shift key being held, i.e. 1/16th of the screen.
- Large button step
- The button behaves the same as the arrow keys with
the shift key being held, i.e. 1/2th of the screen.
- Refresh on pan
- This option is disabled if
indirect drawing mode on the miscellaneous
page of system settings is ticked.
- Control whether the entire map window is refreshed when panning, so that there are no misalignments along line items.
Not required with indirect drawing mode set as it always refreshed the entire map window.
These options control digitisation.
- Inherit attributes
-
When a second item of a particular feature is created, inherit the attributes from the first item created. Applies only
during the current session.
- Split crossed lines
-
When digitising lines, split any other lines that are crossed by the new line, creating nodes if required.
- See also:
- Stepped make polygon
-
When creating individual polygons, this is a useful option for debugging polygons that fail to create, generally because there is a gap between edges, or a pair of spans from a node
intersect, as each line in turn can be reviewed. See also Polygon Make One and Stepped Polygon Creation.
- Tied free/child creation
-
Set whether new children are digitised snapped to the parent item or at the point specified by the user.
- Also controls whether existing children are snapped to their parent when the parent is
moved.
- Copy attributes with item
-
Copy all attributes when copying items using any of the following tools:
- Message log
-
Toggle whether the messages window creates a file.
This can be set with the Message log option in the
File i/o page of the
System Settings dialog box.
- Only list primary attrs
-
When list attributes, only list primary attributes, if this option is set. Attributes may be defined as secondary
in the rules.
- Show short codes
-
Control whether the short codes are shown in addition to the descriptions for features, attributes and enumerated
attribute values across the system.
- Show creation types
-
Control whether the feature that would be created is shown in the Right Button Menu for digitisation
options.
- Remember creation types
-
Remember the features set for creation in the Map Mode bar between sessions.
- Show leading zeros on status bar co-ordinates
-
Control whether the status bar always has at least seven digits, using leading zeros. Useful when near 0,0.
- Show line angle
-
Show the angle of the line being digitised. If the first segment of line is being digitised, this is the angle from the horizontal.
For all subsequent sections, this is the internal angle from the previous segment. The internal angle is also shown when
digitising the first segment of a new span from an existing span.
- Show custom box
-
Control whether the StruMap Customisation dialog box is shown when StruMap is started.
It can be turned off by the Do not show this box again
check box on the StruMap Customisation dialog box.
- Re-load last file(s)
-
Control whether the set of files loaded the last time the system was used are re-loaded when the system
is exited and re-started.
These options control the text in the main StruMap title bar
- View scale
- Show the view scale used to control scale visibility.
- This option is exclusive with Last loaded filename
- Last loaded filename

current DataSpace.
- This option is exclusive with All visible DataSpaces

- Only show the current
DataSpace in the title bar.
